Tongue and Lip Tie Management

Tongue ties, lip ties and buccal ties that are tight and restrictive, may cause functional issues from infants to beyond, including:

  • breastfeeding challenges
  • speech problems
  • chewing and swallowing difficulties
  • poor breathing habits
  • sleep disorders
  • underdeveloped jaws

These tethered oral tissues usually formed at 12 weeks in utero, and the longer they have been untreated, the more the body has to compensate functionally. Hence, a thorough functional evaluation is needed to provide comprehensive and effective management options of these restrictions.

Lip and Tongue Tie Release

At The Dental Suites, we believe in releasing functionally restrictive tethered oral tissues as early as possible. Dr. Donny, our principal dentist, has been trained by the Tongue Tie Institute (www.tonguetieinstitute.com) and performs laser releases of these restrictions using Waterlase at the flagship Myofocus™ Melbourne practice in North Melbourne. The Waterlase has been specifically chosen as our preferred tool for the release procedure because it continuously sprays water to keep the tissues hydrated, preventing heat, and thus, much more comfortable for the patient.

However, when the patient is already older than infants and toddlers, meaning that the ties have been present for longer, then the dysfunctional muscles of the tongue, lips and/or cheeks require intensive orofacial myology (muscle re-training) before and after the release, in order to achieve better functional outcomes. This is the Myofocus™ Take-Off Program, consisting of 8 visits with our Orofacial Myologist, who will empower and educate the patient with the exercises.

Additionally, patients of all ages are strongly recommended to obtain assessments and managements from bodyworkers (osteopaths, chiropractors, etc.) during the entire release program, to assist in minimizing the risk of the ties re-attaching.

Parents of infants and toddlers, who are seeking tethered oral tissue assessments and releases for their children, are encouraged to directly arrange times to see Dr. Donny at Myofocus™ Melbourne, where dedicated appointments are allocated with the presence and support of an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.
